Hi there! My name is Milena Hernández Gallego. I’m a Spanish teacher at la escuela.

I started learning English at the early age of three in a British school in Madrid. My mum had taught herself English when she was in her twenties and both my parents agreed on the importance of learning a second language from a young age. This instilled in me a deep love for languages, literature, and the power of words. This love endured through University, as I studied a Bachelor’s degree in Filología Hispánica (Spanish Language and Literature) at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics to the Teaching of Spanish as Foreign Language at the Universidad Nebrija. I am currently a PhD candidate in Linguistics at the MARCS Institute for Brain, Behaviour & Development (University of Western Sydney), in collaboration with the Little Multilingual Minds (LMM) program. The LMM program is a heritage and second language extension program for children based in Sydney, NSW. My research topic is child bilingualism, and more specifically those children that speak Spanish as a heritage language in Sydney.


I have been working with children in academic and non- academic settings for more than ten years. Throughout university I was a Scout Leader and taught at a Learning Support Academy for school age children. In Australia, I have worked in an After School & Vacation Care Centre (OOSH Community Services) in Coffs Harbour, NSW, for four years.

Since my arrival to Australia in 2018, I have had more than fifteen different jobs. From picking pineapples to nannying I have picked up my fair share of Australian culture, but never neglected my calling to teach Spanish. When I met Tamara in 2019, It was clear we had to join forces and materialize what we both wanted to do: teach Spanish and share our culture with other people.


I am passionate about teaching languages because I can see the impact it has on individuals and society. Learning a second language has real world implications: it opens people’s minds and facilitates communication. It also helps us understand our own language, deconstructs the way we see the world and reconfigures our reality. Learning a language is a powerful tool of creation.

I am currently exploring new ways to connect my love for teaching and languages with my love for art and nature. With the knowledge that I am acquiring through my current studies I will be able to fulfill my committments to updating my teaching methodology and adapting to the needs of my students.
